Is there a little someone missing from your life?
“Dogs are not our whole life but they make our life whole” Martin Buber.
Pet ownership can be of great benefit to human health and wellbeing. Interaction with a pet has been shown to have the following advantages;
• Relieve stress and tension:
There is nothing sweeter than coming home from a stressful day at work and being able to unwind by stroking your pet.
• Reduce high blood pressure:
Pet ownership is effective in controlling spikes in blood pressure caused by stress and tension.
• Encourages exercise:
Dogs require exercise, which is also of benefit to dog owners. Interestingly, surveys have shown that cat owners are as active as dog owners.
• Encourages social interaction:
When we’re out walking, having a dog with us can make us more approachable and give people a reason to stop and talk, thereby increasing the number of people we meet, giving us an opportunity to increase our network of friends and acquaintances, which also has great stress management benefits.
• Helps to prevent or reduce depression:
Pets can help reduce sadness in owners.
• Can ease loneliness:
Pets offer companionship, thus reducing feelings of loneliness. Pets require love and attention. Pet owners enjoy having somebody to care & look after. Pets give lonely owners a sense of purpose.
Also elderly people who live alone are often isolated, pet ownership reduces feelings of isolation & loneliness. Pets can offer a sense of purpose & responsibility in the elderly. They also are more active than non pet owners, which provides an obvious health benefit to them.
