What should I do if I find a stray dog?

Stray dogs are the responsibility of the local council, your first point of contact should be to the Clarence Valley Council Rangers as this is where the owners of a lost dog are most likely to go to find their missing pet. The rangers can be contacted during office hours by phoning Clarence Valley Council on 02 6643 0200. You can also go to the Clarence Valley Council Pound or phone the Pound directly between 9-10am Monday to Friday. call the Rangers directly on 6642 5689. It is also a good idea to contact local veterinary clinics to give a description of the stray dog in case the owner has reported it missing to them. At Riverbank Animal Hospital we maintain a register of lost pets and found stray pets.

If you find a stray dog out of hours you may have to be prepared to look after it until the pound or local vet clinic is next open. Riverbank Animal Hospital in South Grafton is happy to accept stray dogs during opening hours if we have space to hold the dog until council rangers can collect from the veterinary clinic. We are an authorized drop off point for stray pets in the Clarence Valley. If the dog is microchipped (which is compulsory in NSW) vets can often contact the owner directly by scanning the microchip number. At Riverbank Animal Hospital we have direct access to the NSW Companion Animal Register and so have the ability to locate an owner straight away if the stray pet is microchipped. This is why microchipping your pet and keeping your contact details up to date is so important. Please note that it might not always be possible for a stray dog to be handed in to a vet clinic after hours or if all kennel accommodation is full. Riverbank Animal Hospital, located in South Grafton, is a Clarence Valley Council aproved centre to receive stray dogs.

If you find an injured dog on the road or witness an accident involving a dog on the road the first point of contact should be the police, they will assess the situation and call for veterinary assistance if necessary. Grafton Police can be contacted directly on 02 6642 0222.

If you have a dog that is not microchipped we recommend you book your pet in to be chipped this week, it greatly increases your chances of getting your pet back should he or she become lost. Phone us now on 6642 3083! It is quick and not expensive to do.

Riverbank Animal Hospital is your local veterinary practice for Grafton and South Grafton. Located in South Grafton, Northern NSW on the corner of Through and Wharf streets. We are the only veterinary centre in the Grafton area that is exclusively for pets.
